The 2024/25 elite European football season is drawing to a close, and the title races in three of the top five leagues appear to be wrapped up already. In the Premier League, Liverpool hold a mighty 12-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal, and even though the wheels appear to have come off the Anfield bus in recent weeks, they should still have enough about them to get over the line. The same is the case in both Germany and France, as Bayern Munich appear set to return to the summit in the former, and Paris Saint-Germain’s stranglehold isn’t loosening on the latter.

But in both Italy and Spain, we have genuine three-way title fights that look set to go down to the wire. So, who do the bookies think will emerge victorious? Let’s find out.

Barcelona Hold the La Liga Edge

Spain’s title race has been thrilling thus far. Barcelona opened up a mighty lead at the start of the campaign, with the lethal front three of Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, and Raphinha combining to devastating effect. While Real Madrid’s new addition Kylian Mbappe was floundering in his early months in his new Bernabeu surroundings, the Blaugrana were piling up the wins. They opened their campaign with seven straight victories before improving their record to 11 wins in 12 after a shock defeat to Osasuna.

However, throughout the festive period, it was Barca’s turn to flounder, and their rivals caught them up. Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid were the ones that did the damage. A slew of late winners – including a 96th-minute Alexander Sorloth strike away in Catalonia – saw them power to the top of the standings at Barcelona’s expense. Real Madrid also began picking up wins and dragged themselves back into title contention.

But in recent weeks, normal service has resumed. Barca have returned to the summit, and a recent late-late show away against Atletico stretched their lead in the title race to three points ahead of their eternal rivals from the capital, with Los Rojiblancos three points further adrift.

And it is that lead in the title race that has prompted online gambling sites to install them as the favorites to claim the crown. The latest odds from the popular Bovada online gambling site currently make Hansi Flick’s table toppers an odds-on 2/5 frontrunner to reclaim the title. But with an El Clasico still to play against Real Madrid and with the capital city side only three points behind and well within striking distance, they will feel that they are not yet out of the title race. Odds of 2/1 say that they are correct. Atletico, meanwhile, have fallen out of form at the worst possible time, and their recent draw away at Espanyol has seen them pushed all the way out to 16/1.

Inter the Favorites to Defend the Scudetto

Over in Italy, it was a similar story. Antonio Conte’s Napoli were the early pacesetters, with the former Chelsea boss leading his new side to eight wins in their first ten games to send them to the top of the table. At that point, they had plenty of challengers, with Lazio and Atalanta becoming the early ones. Much like Barcelona in La Liga, the Partenopei began to slow down, but unlike the Blaugrana, they haven’t been able to rediscover their form.

Inter Milan won the league last season, but they began this term slowly. They could only manage two wins in their first five games, dropping them down to seventh place and leaving them playing catch up if they wished to retain the Scudetto. But a run of 19 without defeat saw them revitalize their championship ambitions. Surprise losses to Fiorentina and an underwhelming Juventus may well have ended that run, but they have rebounded well, winning three of their last four games to build a three-point lead at the top of the Serie A standings.

On paper, Inter have the best team. The likes of Lautaro Martinez, Nicola Barella, and Alessandro Bastoni make up the strongest spine of any in Serie A, and that has proved pivotal this season. Not only that, but as the season reaches its business end, the Nerazzurri are in the best form, and, unsurprisingly, the bookies make them the 21/50 favorites to retain their crown.

Napoli find themselves second overall at 3/1, but they must sort out their recent slide in form and quickly if they plan to claim the Scudetto for the second time in three years. They have won just one game since the end of January, and poor away performances against relegation candidates such as Como and Venezia have done nothing to help their championship hopes.

Atalanta, meanwhile, are the X-Factor and a distant 16/1 long shot. They are five points adrift of Inter, and it would be an almighty upset if they were to claim the title for the first time ever this term.
